Spinning your wheels

March 3, 2008

I was very fortunate this weekend. One of my passions is skiing and that coincides with another passion of mine, helping my kids grow into great adults. So we had 3 days of great weather and really helped me put some things back into balance.

Anyway, we drove home from Copper Mountain to Kansas City yesterday and we were in a blizzard most of the way through Colorado. For a Brit that is a challenge – not used to snow! On one of the mountain passes there was an up incline strewn with slow moving, spinning cars. It took us about 10 minutes to go a few hundred yards, wheels spinning, moving about 1 mph.

Well we got to the top (I am not still there as I write this fortunately!) but it seemed like a good metaphor for life. How often do we sit there, spinning our wheels and moving at a snails pace? Why is that?

Getting to the top of the snowy slope took a change in approach. No good just pressing the throttle harder. I had to change to a lower gear, take off the traction control, cope with the sideways sliding and actually take my foot off the gas.

What can you do in life to stop the wheels spinning? Do you need to slow down and back off the gas? Try something different? It made me think and I am trying some new things as a result. Life always teaches you lessons if you are on the look out for them!

Have a great week!
