Be careful what you wish for

May 23, 2007

I’m all for focus and personal responsibility – they are corenerstones of coaching. I have found that really concentrating on what you want is very freeing – assuming that you are taking action to move closer to your goals.

However I have also found that getting closer to what you want places new, often exciting challenges in your path. How you react to these things determines, at least in part, how you continue to move forward.

For example, my business is largely built around referrals and personal relationship building. I love doing that, but it takes time. I haven’t fully figured it out yet but the work I have done this year in network building is working and I am having a good time doing it. My personal cahllenge is related to the success of this activity. My time is under pressure now so how do I continue to network as the business grows and demands my time elsewhere?

Here are some thoughts:

1. Be ruthless at determining what gives you value. I used to go to everything! Now I evaluate where my time goes

2.Constantly review my goals – why am I in business? What do I want to achieve and how does that fit in with other things in my life – family, personal growth time, tennis, Royals!

3. Be OK with myself for cutting back on certain things

4. keep focus on what works, try new things that play to this focus

5. Find time to decompress. I don’t do well at network meetings when I am tired

There are other things too but keeping the focus and reminding myself why I am going to events, setting meetings etc. helps.

Happy Memorial Day!

Life can get in the way!

This has been an illustrative couple of weeks for me!

I haven’t posted here for a couple of weeks to my shame. The reason is probably a good one, I have been very busy in my practice both in the networking department and also working with clients. That’s good, and it has meant that my time has come under great pressure!

It set me thinking how I could manage time better in these more pressured times. For me, writing this blog is an important part of what I do so I can’t afford to let it slip as I have. So what to do?

Well, I have become better at the following things:

1. Setting priorities – by this I mean what activities do I do? Which are the most important? Which are the most urgent?

2. Being ruthless in evaluating what I do – which things don’t add sufficient value for me to continue doing them? Which things do I give up?

3. Ensure that I do it! I made sure that I have carried through with the things that I agreed with myself to drop OR decide what I need to do to make the less valuable things worth it for me

4. Write it down!

And it’s working, I am blogging again albeit a day late! Now I am committed to keeping up my Wednesday schedule
