Doing what you want to do

September 20, 2006

When I was in the UK recently I examined my sales strategy. It was clear that I wasn’t making much progress in a particular area and I asked myself why that was.

Upon relfection it was clear that the reason I wasn’t achieving in this area was because it wasn’t actually a sales process I was happy with. Deeper than that, the type of client I would get from those sales wasn’t really what I wanted either! Given these two facts it is unsurprising I wasn’t making progress.

The result? I have re-focused on areas of business that are more interesting to me and am having better results because of that. The sales process in these areas is more fun for me, and therefore I am more likely to do it. The other type of sales activity I have minimised, and I can always return to it later.

The point of this story is to illustrate the power of figuring out what you truly enjoy and therefore want to do. Often this doesn’t mean changing jobs, rather finding areas where you can be successful within your current career.
